EXAMINATION COURSES AT BRUDENELL

Brudenell can enter students for Cambridge examinations at First Certificate and Advanced levels, taken in March, June and December, and Proficiency in June and December. These examinations are collectively known as the Upper Main Suite.

There are five papers to each examination: Reading, Writing, English in Use, Listening and Speaking. There are three pass grades, A, B and C. The pass mark at C level is 60%. To get a B a student must score 75% – 84% and an A can be achieved with 85% or more. Each paper carries equal marks. It is possible to fail one paper, or two very marginally, and still pass the examination overall. Results are issued within eight weeks and if successful, your certificate will arrive about one month later.

Current fees are:

First Certificate £93
Advanced £94
Proficiency £95

We can also enter students for IELTS, (International English Language Testing System), held regularly on a Saturday throughout the year. This examination is suitable for those wishing to enter a British university, or one in Australia or Canada. US universities will now accept students with an IELTS certificate. Students should be at least Upper Intermediate to join one of our courses. However, we will accept students of a slightly lower level, provided they have already taken the test and wish to improve their score.

There are four papers for IELTS: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, each paper carrying equal marks. Unlike the Upper Main Suite, there is no pass or fail with IELTS. However, the minimum score required is 5.5, usually for subjects such as science or IT. Each university sets its own standard, usually dependent on the subject, and you should check with your chosen university before embarking on an IELTS course.

Those on student visas in particular should be aware that the Home Office requires students to work steadily towards examinations, with an emphasis on entering higher education. Those who wish to extend their student visas once in the UK should bear in mind that the Home Office requires evidence of good attendance and progress before a visa can be extended.
