Host Family Accommodation Service

We can arrange accommodation with local families, most of whom live within walking distance of the School or just a short bus or train ride away and who have been carefully inspected by us. All families accepted onto our panel have been selected not just for the quality of their rooms but also for their willingness to make an overseas student feel at home. They live within walking distance of the School or just a short bus or train ride away. All have comfortable modern homes, usually with gardens, and are of a friendly disposition. They are either native speakers or fluent in English and you will speak and be spoken to in English.

Prices can vary according to season and area and we will always attempt to find you the most pleasant and economical accommodation. We do not take families who overcharge and the price list below shows what you can expect to pay per week. In July and August please note that there is an accommodation shortage in London and that rooms may be subjected to a price increase. Whilst we do not deal with families who significantly overcharge, please allow for seasonal variation.

Please note that there is an accommodation shortage in London. Help us to help you get the best room possible by giving us at least 2 weeks notice if you want a room.

Room only

You will have your own room and access to either the family kitchen or you will share one with other students in the house. You will be able to prepare your own meals or eat out. In some cases cooking facilities will be in your room. You are likely to meet members of the family but there will be no guarantee that they will be able to spend time with you and this option suits those who want to be more independent.

Bed & Breakfast

You will have your own room and be given a light breakfast, eg toast, coffee. In some cases you will have it with the family but usually you will help yourself when you get up. You will eat your own lunch, dinner and any other snacks in the family or student kitchen.

Half Board

A very popular choice, particularly with those new to England. You will have your own room, breakfast as above and an evening meal. This is often at a set time and you can expect to eat and speak with the family and any other students in the household. There are also greater opportunities to relax with the family in the evenings and at weekends when you can practice your English even more.

Full Board

You will receive the above as well as either a packed lunch or you will be able to help yourself to a light lunch if you wish to return home mid-day. In a few cases it is possible to have a cooked lunch on request.

INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS WANTING TO RENT A FLAT/HOUSE

Things to Know

Normally done via an accommodation bureau or estate agent - the School cannot recommend but will supply examples of local ones.

You can rent unfurnished, partly furnished of fully furnished. We suggest fully furnished as you should not have to buy any essentials.

Make sure the agent takes an inventory (list) of any contents, fixtures and fittings in the house/flat before you move in and the condition of these things. You should check the list. This is to protect you in the event of your departure as they will need to check those things again.

Make sure that the gas and/or electric meters have been read before you move in, otherwise you may end up paying somebody else's bill!

Normally a six month minimum letting. You will sign a legally binding document.

The contract will be in English. Make sure you understand it before signing it. The School will help you if necessary or you can get the services of a translator at a reasonable fee.

Rent paid monthly with one month's rent as a deposit, to be held against damage, breakages etc.

Make sure you are given a rent book/receipts for proof of rent.

You can take out insurance against loss/damage to your property - Endsleigh Insurance specialise in student contents insurance. Ask the School for details, or you can find your own insurer.

Expect to pay:

Council tax - a reduction for students - can pay monthly.
Gas and/or electricity bills - known as utility bills - paid monthly or quarterly.
Water bill - a fixed amount paid every six months - some premises now have water meters so you 'pay as you go'.
